Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, in patients who already have coronary artery disease, it not only reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke but also lowers the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it helps lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, while raising HDL-cholesterol levels. It is also used to improve various types of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia in young children who respond poorly to dietary therapy. This medication is useful in improving cardiovascular diseases and cholesterol issues.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily; if a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is needed, treatment may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage range is from 10 to 80 mg once daily, and the dosage can be individualized based on treatment goals and response, with lipid levels reassessed and adjusted after 2 to 4 weeks. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia,
For pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be appropriately adjusted based on therapy goals.
