Treatment of type 2 diabetes through blood sugar control and weight improvement
This medication is used for adult patients with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty controlling blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, especially for those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to effectively help control blood sugar. This contributes to stable management of blood sugar levels and prevention of diabetes complications.
The initial dose is 500mg taken once daily with the evening meal. After one week, blood sugar levels should be measured to adjust the dose. Dose increases are made weekly by 500mg, up to a maximum of 2000mg daily with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is inadequate, consideration should be given to taking 1000mg twice daily with meals. Patients with renal impairment should take 500mg or 750mg once daily.
This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition caused by excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body and can be fatal in severe cases. In addition, care must be taken as hypoglycemia may occur when used with other diabetes medications. This medication should not be used in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or acute diseases that may affect renal function such as acute myocardial infarction. Patients with acute heart failure or those scheduled for exams using radiocontrast iodine should also avoid this medication, and its use should be discontinued for a certain period before and after contrast administration. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication or with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe infections, liver dysfunction, excessive alcohol intake should not be treated with this medication. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop this medication 48 hours before the surgery and only resume after kidney function has been confirmed normal. Regular checks of renal function should be conducted while using this medication, and use should be stopped immediately if there is a rapid decline in kidney function. While taking this medication, there is a risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis if meal intake is irregular or insufficient, if there is vigorous exercise, or when using other medications. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, as well as potential vitamin B12 deficiency or taste disturbances. This medication passes through the placenta during pregnancy, so pregnant women should take special care, and it is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. Older adults may experience decreased renal function, so dosage adjustments and regular monitoring of kidney function are necessary. In cases of overdose, hypoglycemia is rare but there is a risk of lactic acidosis, so medical attention should be sought immediately for appropriate treatment. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, as there may be interactions with other medications; therefore, consulting with medical staff is essential. This medication should be swallowed whole and should not be chewed or crushed, although the tablet shell may be expelled intact, which is normal. Finally, store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
