Efficacy & effects

Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in exogenous obesity

  • Exogenous obesity
View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with exogenous obesity who do not respond to appropriate dietary and exercise therapies, particularly those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia with a BMI above 27 kg/m². This drug is utilized as a short-term adjunct therapy for weight loss programs based on exercise, behavioral modification, and calorie restriction. However, it should be taken alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants, and it is crucial to accurately calculate the BMI based on the patient’s weight and height to reflect this in the treatment plan. This medication helps effectively manage obesity and alleviate risk factors.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in combination with other appetite suppressants and is only for short-term use. Co-administration with other drugs intended for weight loss has not been proven safe and effective, so such combinations should be avoided. If symptoms such as shortness of breath, angina, syncope, or leg edema related to primary pulmonary hypertension occur, the physician should be informed immediately, and administration should be ceased. Long-term use at high doses or in conjunction with other appetite suppressants may pose risks associated with valvular heart disease. Patients with advanced atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, moderate to severe hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or specific allergic reactions should not take this medication. Patients with glaucoma, those who are mentally anxious or excitable, and individuals with a history of substance abuse should also avoid administration. If taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping, do not prescribe due to the risk of blood pressure elevation. Children under 16 years and women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should not use this medication. Diabetic patients may require insulin dosage adjustments and should be managed carefully; patients with mild hypertension should be administered cautiously. Overdose may lead to symptoms such as anxiety, coma, tremors, shortness of breath, arrhythmias, and vomiting requiring immediate emergency treatment. This medication affects the central nervous system, potentially causing drowsiness or decreased concentration, so caution is needed when operating machinery or driving. Pregnant or nursing women should use this medication cautiously under a doctor's judgment due to potential risks. Store out of reach of children to prevent safety accidents.
