Improvement of pancreatic exocrine dysfunction
This medication is used for pancreatic exocrine dysfunction, which is a condition where enzymes that aid digestion are not properly secreted from the pancreas.
The dose always depends on the severity of pancreatic impairment and the composition of the meal. 1. Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older The recommended dose is 20,000 ∼ 40,000 EP units of lipase activity from pancreatin powder per meal. Depending on the degree of indigestion, the required amount may be considerably higher. In particular, in patients with cystic fibrosis, the dose of enzymes required for adequate fat absorption should not be exceeded, and the amount and composition of meals should be taken into account. The dose should be increased cautiously and in association with improvement in symptoms (e.g., steatorrhea, abdominal pain). Do not exceed 15,000 ∼ 20,000 EP units of lipase activity per kg of body weight per day or 4,000 EP units per g of fat intake. Take this drug with plenty of water during or immediately after a meal. Chewing this drug or opening the capsule may reduce its efficacy, and the release of enzymes in the mouth may damage the oral mucosa. Therefore, swallow this drug whole. If swallowing the capsule intact is difficult (e.g., for children or older adults), open the capsule, mix its contents with a liquid or soft food (pH < 5.5), and take immediately. The contents must be swallowed immediately without chewing. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease.
Children aged 4 years and under 12 years: Start with a weight-based dose of 500 EP units of lipase activity from pancreatin powder per kg of body weight per meal.
This medication contains enzymes extracted from pig pancreas, so individuals allergic to pork or beef should not take it. Those who have hypersensitivity to any component of this medication or have previously experienced allergic reactions should avoid taking it. Patients with acute pancreatitis or those with exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis should not use this medication. The capsules should not be chewed during administration as chewing the contents can damage the oral mucosa. Individuals taking other medications, cystic fibrosis patients, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers must consult a healthcare professional before taking this medication. Cystic fibrosis patients should take extra caution as symptoms of intestinal obstruction may occur. Individuals with a history of gout, renal failure, or hyperuricemia must be cautious as there is a risk of increased blood uric acid levels when taking this medication. Severe allergic reactions may occur in individuals allergic to pork-derived proteins, necessitating caution. Patients taking folic acid preparations should monitor their condition with blood tests due to the possibility of decreased folic acid absorption. Patients who are currently taking diabetes medications such as acarbose or miglitol should carefully monitor their blood sugar levels. If abnormal abdominal pain or changes in symptoms occur during use, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. If symptoms such as allergic reactions, severe skin rashes, or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately. The prescribed dosage should be strictly followed, especially for children, who must take it under parental supervision. As this medication contains components derived from pig pancreas, there is a theoretical risk of viral infection, although no actual infection cases have been reported. Fine powder forms may cause respiratory irritation or asthma if inhaled into the air, so caution is necessary during use. Store the medication in a sealed container to prevent air and moisture from entering, keep it in a cool place below 25 degrees for optimal effectiveness.
