Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to assist in blood sugar management for patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone and may be combined with other oral hypoglycemics or insulin as needed. It is especially effective when used alongside sulfonylureas or metformin when blood sugar control is not sufficient. This medication contributes to more stable blood glucose control in patients.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally once daily. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg once daily, which can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks. Generally, there is minimal additional effect when doses above 4 mg are administered, but if needed, the dose can be increased up to 6-8 mg. If 4 mg daily doses fail, consider transitioning to insulin therapy or combined therapy.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, or in patients who are in a coma. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or to sulfonylureas should not take it. It is also recommended that patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction do not use this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections or those who are undergoing surgery or have severe trauma may require insulin therapy, so caution is needed. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting should be careful due to the risk of hypoglycemia, as food absorption may be impaired. Patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. During the first week of taking this medication, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, and blood sugar must be checked frequently and monitored carefully. Elderly patients, those who are malnourished or skipping meals, those who frequently consume alcohol, and patients with weakened kidney or liver function are at an increased risk of hypoglycemia. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms and to consume sugar immediately if symptoms occur. In cases of severe hypoglycemia, immediate medical treatment is needed and hospitalization may be required. This medication should be paired with dietary and exercise therapy for blood sugar management, and it is important to take it regularly. When taken with other medications, this medication can affect blood sugar, so patients must inform healthcare providers about any other medications they are taking. Particular caution is warranted due to potential interactions with beta-blockers and certain antibiotics and antifungals. In cases of overdose, serious hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children, and for elderly patients, dosage adjustments may be necessary based on kidney function. When stored, keep out of the reach of children, and store in the original container safely.
