Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes, and also reduces the risk of revascularization procedures and angina. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of hospitalization due to myocardial infarction, stroke, and congestive heart failure. This drug is also used to treat hyperlipidemia and plays a role in lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol. It is especially helpful in controlling cholesterol levels in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or children. In summary, this medication is used to improve heart and vascular health and treat dyslipidemia.
The recommended starting dose for adults is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, and for patients requiring greater reductions in LDL cholesterol levels, it can be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The drug is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily, with the starting and maintenance doses individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics. After initiating treatment and dosage adjustments, lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks to adjust doses accordingly.
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) is 10 mg once daily, with a recommended maximum dose of 20 mg per day. Dosage adjustments should be made according to the recommended treatment goals.
