Precautions

This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so it should be discontinued if kidney function declines rapidly. It is important to temporarily stop taking this medication and consult a physician when experiencing dehydration, severe diarrhea, vomiting, or fever. Patients with kidney function below 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 or those taking medications that may induce acute kidney injury should not use this medication. This medication may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, so patients should be thoroughly informed about the risks and benefits of treatment. It should not be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, acute metabolic acidosis, severe liver dysfunction, pregnant women or those with the possibility of pregnancy, nursing mothers, or patients with severe kidney impairment. Care should also be exercised in patients before and after surgery, those with severe infections, malnutrition, starvation, or severe trauma, and may be temporarily discontinued if necessary. Care is especially needed for patients at high risk of hypoglycemia, especially the elderly or those with irregular eating habits, alcohol consumers, or patients with diminished kidney or liver function. Initial use may cause gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.), which are generally temporary. If allergic reactions or blood anomalies occur, consulting a doctor immediately is necessary, and in severe cases, the medication should be discontinued. This medication can reduce vitamin B12 levels, thus regular monitoring of vitamin B12 may be necessary during long-term use. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication and should switch to insulin therapy if needed. Safety in children and adolescents has not been established, hence caution is advised especially in children under 10 years of age. Elderly patients may require dosage adjustments due to diminished kidney function, and regular kidney function monitoring is necessary. While on this medication, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, kidney function, and blood tests is essential to observe treatment progress. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and hospitalization may be necessary in severe cases. This medication may interact with several other drugs, therefore, it is crucial to inform the doctor or pharmacist if taking other medications and to exercise caution. Caution is needed while driving or operating machinery as hypoglycemia or dizziness may occur. Keep out of reach of children and avoid transferring into other containers.
