Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary management and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The combination administration of Glimepiride and Metformin allows for more effective management of blood sugar levels. This contributes to stabilizing blood sugar levels in patients and assists in diabetes treatment.
This medication should be taken once or twice a day before meals or with meals. The dosage may be adjusted considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerance, necessitating appropriate blood sugar monitoring. Typically, treatment starts at a low dose, and adjustments can be made considering the patient's current medications and blood sugar levels. In clinical trials, the initial daily dose was Glimepiride/Metformin Hydrochloride 2 mg/500 mg, and the dose has been gradually increased to Glimepiride/Metformin Hydrochloride 8 mg/2000 mg based on blood sugar monitoring results. The single-agent Glimepiride generally shows little additional effect at doses above 4 mg per day; however, some patients have shown better metabolic control with doses increased up to 6 mg (or 8 mg). When used as an alternative therapy in combination treatment, dosing should be based on the current regimen of Glimepiride and Metformin Hydrochloride. In case a dose is missed, do not exceed the prescribed dose at the next interval.
This drug may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so special care should be taken in situations where kidney function rapidly deteriorates. If symptoms of dehydration occur, it is advisable to temporarily discontinue this drug and consult a physician. When used with medications that can cause acute renal impairment, renal function should be closely monitored. In patients with cardiovascular diseases, the use of this drug may increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality, so caution is required. This drug is not to be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, acute metabolic acidosis, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Additionally, administration of this drug should be temporarily suspended before and after tests using radiographic contrast agents, and it should be resumed only after renal function has stabilized. Patients at high risk for hypoglycemia, malnutrition, and those with high alcohol intake require dosage adjustments and careful monitoring. Gastrointestinal side effects (such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.) may occur initially but are mostly temporary and can be alleviated by taking the medication with food. Rarely, vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so regular blood testing is recommended during long-term use. This drug may interact with other medications, so it is essential to inform a physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery due to the potential for hypoglycemia or dexterity impairment. In case of overdose, symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought. This drug requires careful observation and dosage adjustments when used in children or the elderly. It is important to regularly monitor blood sugar levels and renal function to confirm the efficacy and safety of treatment.
