This medication is effective in preventing and treating asthma. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, with asthma patients taking it in the evening. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take it once daily, 1 tablet in the evening. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew 4 mg of Montelukast once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This drug is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis, and changes in mental state such as agitation, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, and suicidal ideation have been reported, so patients should be carefully monitored for these symptoms during treatment. The artificial sweetener aspartame in this medication is converted to phenylalanine in the body, so patients with phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. Since it contains lactose, it is safer not to use in patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. Various adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and rash may occur during treatment; if any symptoms appear, consult with a healthcare professional. During acute asthma attacks, this medication is not an immediate treatment, so an emergency inhaler should always be prepared and used.
