This medication helps prevent and treat asthma continuously. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; for asthma patients, it should be taken in the evening, and for allergic rhinitis patients, the dosing time should be determined according to the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet, 1 packet, or 1 strip in the evening, once daily. Administer 4 mg oral tablet 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

For children aged 2 to 5 years, place 4 mg of Montelukast on the tongue once daily and allow it to dissolve without water. Administer 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which breaks down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should not take this medication. The daily intake of aspartame is limited based on body weight, with a maximum of 2.4 grams per day for adults. Individuals who have an allergy to any ingredients in this medication should not take it. Additionally, this medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. This medication is not intended for treating acute asthma attacks; therefore, appropriate emergency medication should always be on hand when acute symptoms occur. When used in conjunction with inhaled corticosteroids, the dosage should be gradually reduced according to a doctor's instructions, as sudden changes can be dangerous. Rarely, neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur during use, and if such symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a doctor is required. Patients allergic to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during treatment with this medication. Some asthma patients may experience an increase in certain blood cell counts as a side effect, hence doctors should monitor this closely. This medication is known to not significantly increase side effects when used with other asthma treatments. Pregnant women should only take this medication when absolutely necessary, and caution is needed during breastfeeding as well. It is safe for use in children and the elderly, but dosages and administration methods should be determined according to a doctor's advice. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general treatment and monitoring are necessary. This medication is sensitive to light, so it should not be opened until just before use, and should be taken immediately after preparation.
