This medication is used to slow the progression of symptoms associated with Alzheimer's type dementia and to improve cognitive functions.

How to take

Adult dose

As Donepezil Hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily at bedtime. For 4 to 6 weeks, the dose should be maintained at 5 mg, and after evaluating clinical response during this period, it may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing to 10 mg per day, caution should be taken regarding gastrointestinal side effects.

Child dose

There is no experience of use in pediatric patients.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals who are allergic to specific drugs or substances. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and those who are breastfeeding should not take this medication. This medication is also unsuitable for patients who are genetically unable to digest certain sugars. Patients with heart conditions should be cautious as this medication can cause slow or irregular heartbeats. Patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use this medication carefully, as gastrointestinal symptoms may worsen. Patients with asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease should be careful as bronchoconstriction or increased mucus secretion may worsen symptoms. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should consult a physician before taking this medication, as symptoms may worsen. During the use of this medication, side effects such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and insomnia may occur, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. In serious cases, cardiac issues, liver dysfunction, neurological abnormal symptoms, and muscular abnormal symptoms may occur, necessitating regular monitoring. This medication is approved for the treatment of dementia and should not be used for other types of memory disorders, and treatment should be conducted under the supervision of a specialist. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery, as fatigue or dizziness may occur at the beginning of treatment or during dose adjustments. This medication is metabolized by specific enzymes, so drug interactions may alter efficacy; thus, informing medical personnel about ongoing medications is essential. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication; if it is necessary to take it, breastfeeding should be suspended. Safety in children has not been established; therefore, it should not be used in pediatric patients. In cases of overdose, there is a risk of severe nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, and respiratory depression, so immediate medical attention is required; atropine may be used as an antidote.
