Summary

Main use
Treatment of HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
May be administered with or without food and must be prescribed by a physician experienced in the treatment of HIV infection. The tablets should be swallowed whole without crushing to ensure administration of the full dose. Adults, adolescents: Administer 1 tablet (300mg) twice daily or 2 tablets (600mg) once daily. If you wish to change the dosing regimen, follow these instructions. 1) To change from twice-daily to once-daily dosing: After taking the last dose of the twice-daily regimen, wait approximately 12 hours before taking the dose of the once-daily regimen. Thereafter, take the once-daily regimen at 24-hour intervals. 2) To change from once-daily to twice-daily dosing: After taking the last dose of the once-daily regimen, wait approximately 24 hours before taking the twice-daily regimen. Patients with renal impairment: No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment, but administration should be avoided in patients with end-stage renal disease. Patients with hepatic impairment: Abacavir is metabolized primarily in the liver. No dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with mild hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score 5-6), but administration should be avoided in patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment because there are insufficient data to support a dosage. If abacavir is administered to patients with mild hepatic impairment, careful monitoring is required, including monitoring of abacavir plasma concentrations where possible.
Child dose
Children weighing 25kg or more: Administer 1 tablet (300mg) per dose twice daily, or 2 tablets (600mg) once daily. Children weighing 20kg or more to less than 25kg: The recommended daily dose is 450mg. Administer 1/2 tablet (150mg) in the morning and 1 tablet (300mg) in the evening, or 1 and 1/2 tablets (450mg) once daily.
