Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection
This medication is used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients. It is particularly indicated for patients with active viral replication confirmed and persistent elevation of serum aminotransferase (ALT or AST), or those with evidence of active disease on biopsy. It is effective for both HBeAg positive and negative chronic hepatitis B patients, and can also be used for patients with lamivudine resistance. This medication helps improve liver function and suppress viral replication in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B.
Adults: The recommended dose of adefovir dipivoxil is 10 mg orally once daily, with or without food. Patients with renal impairment: Adjust the dosing interval in patients with a creatinine clearance of less than 50 mL/min. Creatinine clearance 50 mL/min or higher: 10 mg once daily Creatinine clearance 20-49 mL/min: 10 mg every 48 hours Creatinine clearance 10-19 mL/min: 10 mg every 72 hours Patients with a creatinine clearance of less than 10 mL/min who are receiving hemodialysis: 10 mg every 7 days (after hemodialysis) The pharmacokinetics of adefovir have not been evaluated in patients with a creatinine clearance of less than 10 mL/min who are not receiving hemodialysis; therefore, no dosing recommendations are available for these patients.
This medication must be taken according to the recommended dosage. Exceeding the recommended amount can lead to severe side effects. Suddenly stopping the treatment can worsen hepatitis, so regular liver function tests are necessary for a certain period even after discontinuation. If needed, treatment can be resumed. Patients with compromised liver function or progressive cirrhosis require closer monitoring from the beginning of treatment. This medication can put stress on the kidneys; therefore, patients with compromised kidney function or taking other medications affecting renal function should exercise caution. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted before and during treatment. HIV infection status must be confirmed, and patients with HIV should not be treated with this medication alone due to the risk of developing resistance, thus appropriate antiviral therapy should be considered. This medication may cause serious side effects, such as lactic acidosis or severe hepatic steatosis, so if such symptoms are suspected, it should be stopped immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. It does not completely prevent the transmission of hepatitis B to others, so appropriate precautions are needed to prevent infection. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medication and, if necessary, should use effective contraception. It is advisable to avoid taking this medication while breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been sufficiently established; therefore, it should be used with caution in this age group. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney function, so special care is needed when using this medication. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately as appropriate treatment is necessary; this medication can be partially removed through blood dialysis. When storing this medication, keep it out of reach of children and avoid transferring it to another container. This medication can cause a variety of side effects, including worsening liver function, decreased kidney function, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin rashes, etc.; consequently, if any abnormal symptoms arise, consult medical staff immediately.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air and moisture from entering. It is advisable to maintain a storage temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. This helps to preserve the effectiveness of the medication.
