This medication helps to prevent and manage asthma consistently. It is also used to alleviate symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, for asthma patients, it should be taken in the evening, and for allergic rhinitis patients, the dosing time is determined according to the patient's condition. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew 4 mg once daily as Montelukast. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This drug is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. During use, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as restlessness, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts may occur, so patients and caregivers must inform the doctor immediately if such changes occur. This medication contains an artificial sweetener called aspartame, so patients with phenylketonuria should avoid it. Do not use it if there is an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to any of the components of this medication. This drug is not for use during acute asthma attacks, so a separate fast-acting inhaler should be prepared for emergencies. Patients who are hypersensitive to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be careful not to take these medications together while using this drug. It can be used by individuals from children to the elderly, but particular caution should be taken for children and pregnant women, following a doctor's guidance. There is no specific antidote for overdose; therefore, general treatment and observation are required. This medication is sensitive to light; it should be opened just before taking and taken immediately after dispensation, and kept out of the reach of children when stored. During the course of treatment, do not suddenly stop or change the dosage of other asthma medications without a doctor's direction, and consult a doctor immediately if symptoms worsen or unusual symptoms occur.

Serious side effects

  • Urticaria, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe allergic reactions
  • Severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, mucosal pain in mouth/eyes, severe cutaneous adverse reactions
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, angioedema, severe edema or urinary abnormalities
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, respiratory abnormalities accompanied by cough + fever
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Mild side effects

Restlessness, aggressive behavior, dissatisfaction, depression, disorientation, attention disorder, stuttering, sleep disturbances and hallucinations, insomnia, memory impairment, obsession, psychomotor agitation (including irritability, instability, tremor), sleepwalking, tics, dizziness, drowsiness, perceptual disturbances/perceptual reduction, palpitations, nosebleed, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, thrombocytopenia, itching, rash, urticaria, joint pain, muscle cramps, myalgia, nocturia, edema, rash
