Treatment of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia (primary, familial) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and various forms of dyslipidemia. It helps in the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia patients whose condition cannot be controlled by diet and exercise, and is particularly effective for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. It also lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It can be used as an adjunct to diet in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 who meet certain criteria. Furthermore, it helps in reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and myocardial infarctions. Overall, this medication is used to improve dyslipidemia and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Can be taken at any time of the day regardless of meals. The initial dose is 5 mg once daily, and the maintenance dose can be adjusted up to 10 mg once daily. The maintenance dose should be appropriately adjusted every 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, and can be increased up to a maximum of 20 mg per day.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), doses of 5 mg to 20 mg are administered once daily. The dosage is individually adjusted according to therapeutic goals.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, those with allergies to its components, severely impaired liver function, neuromuscular disease, severe kidney impairment, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use it. Moreover, women who may become pregnant should ensure that they are highly unlikely to be pregnant before taking this medication and should use appropriate contraceptive methods. Careful use is required in patients at risk of neuromuscular disorders, such as those with slight kidney impairment, hypothyroid patients, patients with a family history of neuromuscular disorders, alcoholics, or those taking certain concurrent medications, potentially requiring dose adjustments or regular monitoring. Since this medication contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. Regular monitoring of liver function and muscle condition is necessary while on this medication, and immediate consultation with healthcare providers is required if symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occur. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so patients taking other medications must inform their healthcare providers, especially when used in combination with specific antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, and fibrate-class drugs. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, this medication should not be used, and women planning to become pregnant should consult before use. In the case of overdose, as no specific antidote exists, immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment and evaluation. Caution is needed while driving or operating machinery, as dizziness may occur. Lastly, this medication may show higher plasma concentrations in Asians, leading to a need for dose adjustments.
