This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia when these interventions alone are not effective. It is also used with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to control cholesterol levels. In patients with hypercholesterolemia, it helps to lower total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It can be safely used in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia. It is also suitable as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Lastly, in adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease, it contributes to reducing the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization. In summary, this medication effectively improves cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease risk.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients who are allergic to its components, patients with severely impaired liver function, patients with muscle disorders, patients taking certain medications, patients with severe renal impairment, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, this medication should be used with caution in patients at high risk for muscle-related side effects. These patients include those with moderate to severe renal impairment, hypothyroidism, a family history of muscle disorders, patients with alcohol addiction, and the elderly. As this medication can affect liver function, patients with a history of liver disease or excessive alcohol consumption should undergo regular liver function tests before and during treatment. If symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle weakness, or cramps occur, patients should notify their doctor immediately, and a blood test should be performed to check for muscle damage. If significant muscle damage is present, the medication should be discontinued. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should avoid it. This medication can interact with other medications, so patients must inform their healthcare provider about any other medications they are taking. Caution is needed when combining it with specific antivirals, immunosuppressants, antifungals, and fibrate-class drugs. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use appropriate contraception and should discontinue use immediately if they become pregnant. It is also advisable for breastfeeding women not to use this medication. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so treatment should be based on symptoms, and liver and muscle function tests are necessary. Patients should be cautious as dizziness may occur while driving or operating machinery. Finally, this medication may rarely cause severe skin reactions, liver damage, renal abnormalities, or neurological symptoms in some patients, so they should consult their healthcare provider if any unusual symptoms occur.
