This medication is used for the prevention and ongoing management of asthma. It also helps alleviate the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is effective for improving respiratory health in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; for asthma patients, it is recommended to take it in the evening, while for allergic rhinitis patients, the timing should be determined according to the patient's condition. Patients having both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew and take 5 mg of montelukast once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. During treatment, neurological or psychiatric side effects may occur, so patients and caregivers should closely monitor for changes in mental state such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If such symptoms or behavioral changes occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with certain genetic disorders such as phenylketonuria should avoid it. Additionally, this medication contains lactose; therefore, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic conditions. This medication is not used for the treatment of acute asthma attacks; appropriate emergency medication should always be kept on hand and used during acute symptoms. Patients with allergies to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not take these medications concurrently with this drug. It is available for various age groups from children to the elderly, but children and pregnant women should take it strictly under medical supervision, and use during pregnancy should only occur if absolutely necessary. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment and medical advice should be followed. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open it until it is ready to be taken, and consume it immediately once opened. This medication should be taken consistently even in the absence of asthma symptoms, and if symptoms worsen or any other abnormal symptoms occur, a physician should be consulted.

Urticaria, angioedema, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, paleness, severe allergic reactions, severe rash accompanied by high fever, blisters, skin peeling, mucosal pain in mouth/eyes, severe skin reactions, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attack, respiratory abnormalities associated with cough + fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), profound lethargy, liver abnormalities (jaundice), sudden and very severe headache

Mild side effects

Weakness/fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, injury, indigestion, infectious gastroenteritis, toothache, dizziness, headache, nasal congestion, cough, influenza, rash, increased ALT, increased AST, urine clouding, pharyngitis, sinusitis, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, ear pain, viral infection, laryngitis, runny nose, ear pain, gastroenteritis, eczema, chickenpox, pneumonia, dermatitis, conjunctivitis, drowsiness, sensory disturbances/diminished perception, palpitations, nosebleed, pulmonary eosinophilia
