This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It also helps alleviate the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Patients can effectively manage asthma symptoms and reduce discomfort caused by allergic rhinitis by using this medication regularly. Therefore, it is used for both asthma and allergic rhinitis treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening, and allergic rhinitis patients should determine the dosing time according to their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew and take 4 mg of montelukast once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that makes it difficult to metabolize phenylalanine, should avoid taking it. The daily intake of aspartame in this medication should be limited to less than 40mg per kg of body weight, which is the WHO recommendation, and for adults, it is safe to take a maximum of 2.4g per day. Patients who are allergic to this medication or its ingredients, as well as those with a genetic disorder that prevents them from breaking down lactose, should not take this medication. This medication is not intended for use during an acute asthma attack, and patients must have an emergency inhaler prepared when asthma worsens. While taking this medication, symptoms of neuropsychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and hallucinations, may occur, and if such symptoms arise, the patient should consult a doctor immediately. In cases of bronchospasm induced by exercise, this medication alone may not be sufficient, and a bronchodilator should be used concurrently. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid using these medications while taking this medication. This medication may rarely cause serious inflammatory reactions such as vasculitis, so if a rash or worsening respiratory symptoms occur, the patient should inform their doctor. No significant interactions have been reported with other medications, but caution is needed when taking medications that induce specific liver metabolic enzymes. During pregnancy, it should only be used when necessary, and breastfeeding mothers should be cautious as this medication may be excreted in breast milk. Children and the elderly can also take this medication, but the appropriate dosage and precautions for each age group must be strictly followed. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so symptomatic treatment should be provided, and it is important to visit a medical institution immediately. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open the packaging until ready to take, and consume it quickly during use.
