Treatment of schizophrenia
This medication is used to alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Adults: The usual dose is 4 mg per dose, twice daily after meals by oral administration; increase the dose gradually. The maintenance dose is 8~16 mg per day, divided into 2 doses after meals. As absorption of this medicine is readily affected by food, it must be taken after meals. Carefully monitor and adjust the dose for each patient so that it is the minimum required dose, and do not exceed the maximum daily dose of 24mg.
Care should be taken as this medication may increase the risk of death in elderly patients with cognitive impairment. The risk of cerebrovascular disease may increase in dementia patients, and patients at risk of stroke should exercise particular caution. The possibility of venous thromboembolism exists, so risk factors for thrombosis should be checked and preventive measures should be taken before and during the use of this medication. Patients who are in a comatose state or those taking strong central nervous system depressants, or those taking certain antifungal or antiviral medications, should not use this medication. Patients with genetic metabolic issues such as lactose intolerance should also avoid administration. Patients with cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, those at risk of suicide, liver dysfunction, and diabetes should be administered with caution and must consult healthcare professionals immediately if any abnormal symptoms occur. This medication can cause serious side effects such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, paralytic ileus, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, rhabdomyolysis, liver dysfunction, and hyperglycemia; hence, if any abnormal symptoms occur, it should be discontinued and treated immediately. Drowsiness or reduced concentration may occur during use, so caution should be exercised when driving a car or operating dangerous machinery. When used in combination with drugs that affect liver function, blood concentration may increase; therefore, patients must inform their healthcare professionals if they are taking such medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with a physician before administration, as it may affect the fetus or newborn. The safety in pediatric and neonatal populations has not been established; therefore, use is not recommended. This medication must be taken after meals, as absorption may decrease when taken on an empty stomach.
