This medication is effective in preventing asthma attacks and in the continuous treatment of asthma. It is also used to alleviate the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is to be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening. Allergy patients should adjust the dosage time according to their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take one tablet in the evening, once daily. Adults and adolescents aged 15 and over should take 10 mg orally, once daily as montelukast.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so individuals with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder, should not take it. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, so it is contraindicated for patients with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. During use, various adverse effects such as fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, indigestion, dizziness, headache, nasal congestion, cough, and rash may occur. Consult a doctor if symptoms are severe or persistent. Particularly in asthma patients, rare systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms may occur, so if symptoms of eosinophilia, skin rashes, or worsening respiratory symptoms arise, immediately inform healthcare professionals. This medication is not for use during acute asthma attacks; be sure to carry appropriate emergency medications and use them if acute symptoms occur. Do not abruptly stop or change inhaled or oral corticosteroids during use, and adjustments should be made gradually following a doctor's instructions. Do not use this medication alone to treat exercise-induced bronchoconstriction; inhaled β-agonists should be used in conjunction if needed. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should be careful not to take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication. Pregnant or nursing women must consult a doctor before taking this medication, especially during early pregnancy. This medication can be used in children and the elderly; however, safety in children under 6 months has not been established. There is no specific antidote for overdose; general symptomatic treatment and clinical monitoring are required. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open the package until just before taking it, and take it immediately after preparing for use. Lastly, keep this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container.
