Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerant to ACE inhibitors), reduction of the risk of death after myocardial infarction
This medicine is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps improve heart failure symptoms in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors, particularly those with NYHA classification II to IV symptoms. In patients with left ventricular failure or decreased contraction function after myocardial infarction, it is used to reduce the risk of death. Thus, it effectively improves cardiovascular health for patients through blood pressure management, heart failure treatment, and reduction of risk after myocardial infarction.
For essential hypertension, oral administration of 80 mg once daily as valsartan is recommended. If blood pressure control is inadequate, the dose may be increased to 160 mg once daily, or a diuretic may be combined, and it may be increased up to a maximum of 320 mg. Elderly patients (75 years or older) should start at 40 mg once daily. For heart failure, the starting dose is recommended at 40 mg orally twice daily, which may be increased to 80 mg or 160 mg per dose.
Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so use is not recommended.
This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be stopped immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with allergic reactions to this drug or severe liver dysfunction or severe renal dysfunction should not use it. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, and patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction need to exercise extra caution when taking this drug, as there is a risk of rapid blood pressure drop; starting with a lower dose is advisable. Various side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, headache, and cough may occur while taking this drug; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. Patients with heart failure or after myocardial infarction may experience changes in kidney function, so regular kidney function tests are necessary. Due to its blood pressure-lowering effects, this drug may cause syncope upon initial dosing, particularly in patients with low fluid or sodium levels. Because of the risk of hyperkalemia, potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements should be used with caution, and serum potassium levels should be monitored closely. Caution is advised when used with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as the blood pressure-lowering effect may be reduced and kidney function may be affected. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should preferably not take this drug, and if unavoidable, should consult a doctor. Safety for children and adolescents has not been established; therefore, use is not recommended. In case of overdose, there is a risk of hypotension, decreased consciousness, and shock, so immediate medical attention is necessary. This drug should be stored out of the reach of children; transferring it to another container may result in accidents, so caution is necessary.
