This medication is used to prevent and provide continuous treatment for asthma. It also helps relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis that occur seasonally or throughout the year. Therefore, it is effective for improving symptoms associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once daily, with asthma patients advised to take it in the evening. For allergic rhinitis patients, the dosing time is determined based on the patient's condition. Those with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once a day. Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older are to take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, and should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that requires restriction of phenylalanine intake. The daily allowable amount of aspartame should be adjusted to the minimum to not exceed the WHO recommended amount, and for a 60 kg adult, the maximum daily dose is up to 2.4 g. Those who have an allergic reaction to this medication or any of its components should not take it, and patients with lactose intolerance or genetic lactose metabolism disorders should also refrain from using this medication. The safety of this medication has been evaluated in clinical trials for patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis, but various adverse reactions, such as weakness, fatigue, headache, cough, and rash, have been reported; therefore, consult a doctor if any unusual symptoms occur. This medication is not a treatment for acute asthma attacks; therefore, an additional fast-acting bronchodilator should always be carried and used in emergencies. It is also advisable to avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication, and caution is required for patients with a history of aspirin hypersensitivity. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor before using this medication, as there is insufficient information regarding its effects on fetuses or newborns. This medication can be used by children and elderly patients; however, its safety and efficacy have not been established in infants under 6 months. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment should be implemented according to symptoms, and immediate medical attention should be sought if any unusual symptoms appear. This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be taken promptly after opening the package, and it should be stored out of reach of children. Lastly, this medication should be taken continuously even during periods without symptoms of asthma or allergic rhinitis, and a doctor should be consulted if symptoms worsen or unusual symptoms arise.
