Adult dose

This medication is primarily used for the management of essential hypertension and is effective in treating heart failure patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of mortality in patients with decreased left ventricular function following myocardial infarction. Based on these effects, it improves the heart health of patients and assists in the management after heart failure and myocardial infarction.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, the recommended oral dose for adults is 80 mg of valsartan once daily. If blood pressure control is inadequate, the dose may be increased up to 160 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 320 mg. For elderly patients (75 years or older), treatment should begin with 40 mg once daily. In heart failure treatment, the starting dose is 40 mg orally twice a day, which may be increased to 80 mg or 160 mg per dose.

Child dose

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus during pregnancy, so it should be stopped immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not use this medication. Patients with severe liver dysfunction and severe kidney disease should also refrain from using this medication for safety. Patients with a history of allergic reactions or angioedema should be cautious as taking this medication may be risky. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and patients with mild liver dysfunction should have dosage adjustments and monitoring of their condition when using this medication. Patients after heart failure or myocardial infarction may need regular kidney function tests due to potential changes in kidney function. This medication lowers blood pressure, so hypotension can occur upon first use; if symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately. When used in conjunction with other antihypertensives or diuretics, the risk of side effects may increase, so consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Potassium levels may increase while taking this medication; therefore, patients at risk for hyperkalemia should consistently check potassium levels. Caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery due to potential dizziness. In case of overdose, symptoms like hypotension and decreased consciousness may occur, necessitating immediate contact with medical services for appropriate action. Safety in children and adolescents has not yet been established, so use is not recommended. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
