This medicine helps prevent asthma attacks and assists in ongoing treatment. It is also used to alleviate symptoms of seasonal and persistent allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once daily. For asthma patients, it is taken in the evening. For allergic rhinitis patients, dosing time is determined according to the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 10 mg once daily in the evening. Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily.

Precautions

This medication contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, therefore should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that restricts phenylalanine intake. Additionally, due to the lactose content in this medication, patients with lactose intolerance should not take this medicine. Various side effects such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, rash, and cough may occur while taking this medication, and if symptoms worsen, medical consultation should be sought. Particularly, for asthma patients, this medication is not intended for treating acute asthma attacks; appropriate emergency medication should be used immediately if acute symptoms occur. Patients who are hypersensitive to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medicine. Pregnant or nursing individuals must consult with a physician before taking this medication and should only use it if necessary. Pediatric patients may have varying safety and efficacy based on age; therefore, they should take this medicine according to a physician's directions. In the case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, hence general supportive treatment should be undertaken and immediate medical assistance should be sought. This medicine is sensitive to light, so it should be opened just prior to consumption and taken immediately, and stored out of reach of children. If neuropsychiatric symptoms or adverse reactions occur during use, it is essential to inform a physician immediately, and other asthma treatments should not be stopped or dosages altered without a physician's direction.
