For essential hypertension, an oral dose of 80 mg of valsartan once daily is recommended, which may be increased to 160 mg if blood pressure control is not adequate, with a maximum dose of 320 mg per day. For elderly patients (75 years and older), treatment should begin at 40 mg once daily. For heart failure, an oral dose of 40 mg should be taken twice daily, which may be increased to 80 mg or 160 mg.
