This medication helps to prevent and treat asthma continuously. It is also used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis occurring seasonally or throughout the year.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, with asthma patients taking it in the evening and allergic rhinitis patients determining the time based on their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take one tablet in the evening once daily. Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should orally ingest 10 mg once daily as montelukast.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, thus patients with the hereditary condition phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. Aspartame intake should be limited to below the WHO recommended level, and adults should ensure not to exceed a maximum of 2.4 g per day. Patients allergic to this medication or its components should not take it, and those with hereditary issues that prevent lactose digestion should also avoid it. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks; hence, emergency medications must be kept on hand and used according to a doctor's instructions during acute symptoms. When used in conjunction with inhaled corticosteroids, the dosage should gradually be reduced under a doctor's supervision, as sudden changes can be hazardous. During the course of treatment, neuropsychiatric symptoms may appear, and it is essential for patients or caregivers to notify a physician immediately of any such changes. Do not use it alone for the treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm and continue using inhaled beta-agonists as needed. Patients sensitive to aspirin should avoid using aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking this medication, and it has not been proven to be effective for aspirin-sensitive asthma. Rarely, systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms may occur during treatment, requiring the physician to monitor the patient closely. No specific interactions have been reported with other medications; however, clinical monitoring may be necessary when used in combination with certain drugs. Use during pregnancy should only occur when necessary, and breastfeeding women should use it with caution. The safety and efficacy for children, especially infants under 6 months, have not been established and are not recommended. There is no specific antidote for overdose, and general symptomatic treatment should be implemented. This medication is sensitive to light; therefore, it should be opened immediately before use and taken right after preparation, and kept out of reach of children. It is crucial to seek medical attention if asthma symptoms worsen or if there is increased use of short-acting bronchodilators. During treatment, do not suddenly reduce or stop the dosage of other asthma medications without a doctor's direction.
