Reduction of risk of cardiovascular disease and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular diseases. First, it helps decrease the risk of cardiovascular events in adult patients with a history of coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, or who are at high risk. It also regulates cholesterol levels within the normal range for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, improving cardiovascular health. Notably, it is effective in reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, along with dietary management. This medication normalizes blood lipid levels, aiding in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
1. Reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease: the initial dosage is 40 mg of simvastatin once daily. 2. Hyperlipidemia: - The typical initial dosage is 20 mg administered once daily in the evening. - Patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia may start with 10 mg. - The recommended dosing range is 5-40 mg once daily in the evening. - Before starting treatment, establish the initial LDL cholesterol level, treatment goals, and patient's response to medication.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17): initial dose of 10 mg once daily in the evening. The recommended dosage range is 10-40 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 40 mg.
