Summary

Main use
Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), reduction of risk of death after myocardial infarction
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
For essential hypertension, take with water during meals or in-between meals. It is recommended to take it at the same time every day (e.g., morning). As valsartan, the recommended dose is 80 mg orally once a day. Patients whose blood pressure is not well controlled may increase the dosage to 160 mg once daily or combine with a diuretic. If further blood pressure reduction is needed, the dosage can be increased up to a maximum of 320 mg once daily. Elderly patients (75 years or older): start with a dose of 40 mg once daily. Patients with renal impairment: (1) Creatinine clearance 20 to 50 mL/min: No dose adjustment necessary. (2) Creatinine clearance 10 to 20 mL/min: Start with a dose of 40 mg once daily. (3) Creatinine clearance below 10 mL/min and dialysis patients: this medication should not be administered. (4) Patients with reduced body fluid: Patients with low blood volume (e.g., those on high doses of diuretics who cannot reduce the dose) should start with a dose of 40 mg once daily. (5) Patients with liver impairment: Mild to moderate liver impairment should start with a dose of 40 mg once daily and not exceed 80 mg. In severe liver impairment, liver cirrhosis, or cholestasis, this medication should not be used. (6) Children: Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

View approved original text

This medication is used in the treatment of essential hypertension and is effective for the management of heart failure patients (NYHA class II to IV) who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. It also helps reduce the risk of death in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or left ventricular systolic dysfunction after myocardial infarction. Therefore, it is used to improve hypertension, heart failure, and cardiac function decline after myocardial infarction.

How to take

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with known allergies to this medication or its ingredients, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver or kidney disease, and those with a history of angioedema should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with high potassium levels, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease should use this medication with caution, as they may experience hypotension or changes in kidney function, so their conditions should be monitored closely. During treatment with this medication, side effects such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, cough, and diarrhea may occur, and rarely severe allergic reactions or kidney dysfunction may develop, so consult a doctor immediately if symptoms arise. Blood pressure may drop suddenly or fainting may occur, so especially when starting treatment, it is important to begin with a low dose and monitor the condition closely. When taken together with other antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, or potassium-sparing medications, interactions may cause dangerously high potassium levels, so patients must inform their doctor of all medications they are taking. Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should not take this medication, and its use is not recommended during breastfeeding. Use is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In the case of overdose, blood pressure may drop too low, so seek appropriate medical treatment immediately.
