Treatment of bacterial infections (respiratory, genitourinary, skin, etc.) and adjunctive treatment of Hansen’s disease
This medication is an antibiotic effective against various bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, used for the treatment of several types of bacterial infections. It is mainly suitable for treating complicated skin and soft tissue infections, both acute and chronic otitis media, and bacterial sinusitis. It is also effective for acute exacerbations of community-acquired pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Additionally, it is used for acute pyelonephritis, uncomplicated acute cystitis, prostatitis, epididymitis, and urethritis due to urinary tract infections. Furthermore, it helps in the treatment of bacterial dysentery, enteritis, female adnexitis, intrauterine infections, and eye-related infections. However, as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, there is a risk of severe adverse reactions, so its use should be reserved for cases with no alternative therapies to enhance safety and effectively treat infections.
○ The usual adult dose is 300~600 mg of ofloxacin per day, divided into 2~3 doses. ○ For leprosy, take 400~600 mg of this medicine per day, divided into 2~3 doses. In principle, use in combination with other antileprosy drugs. The dose may be adjusted appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This medication may cause tendon-related issues such as tendinitis and tendon rupture, as well as peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system symptoms. If serious adverse symptoms occur, you must immediately discontinue this medication. Patients with myasthenia gravis should avoid using this medication as it may worsen their symptoms. This medication is only used for specific bacterial infections and should only be administered when no other treatment options are available. Caution is required for the elderly, patients with reduced kidney function, organ transplant recipients, or those taking corticosteroids, as the risk of tendon rupture is increased. Avoid concurrent use with corticosteroids, and if tendonitis or tendon rupture symptoms occur, discontinue and rest immediately. This medication has a neuromuscular blocking effect that may worsen symptoms in patients with myasthenia gravis, so cautious use is advised. Patients with hypersensitivity, previous tendon issues related to this medication or similar drugs, those under 18 years, pregnant or nursing women, those with certain enzyme deficiencies, and those with a history of seizures should not take this medication. Patients severely impaired in kidney or liver function, the elderly, those with a history of mental disorders, or aortic disease history must use this medication with utmost caution. Rarely, serious side effects such as anaphylactic shock, severe skin reactions, hepatitis, renal failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, neuropsychiatric symptoms, muscle and joint pain, respiratory issues, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur. During the medication period, one should avoid excessive sun exposure, and if rashes or skin abnormalities appear, stop immediately. Special caution must be taken for patients with epilepsy or brain-related conditions due to the risk of seizures. If a seizure occurs, discontinue the medication. Regular liver, kidney, and blood tests should be conducted during long-term use. Adequate hydration is necessary to reduce kidney burden, and as dizziness or drowsiness may occur, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Blood glucose variations may occur when taken with glucose-regulating medications, so blood sugar must be monitored carefully. Due to numerous drug interactions, especially with anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, antacids, and immunosuppressants, consulting with a physician or pharmacist is essential when co-administering. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not use this medication and must discontinue breastfeeding. Safety has not been established for children and adolescents in growth, so it should not be used. The elderly may experience increased blood concentration of this medication due to declining kidney function, so dosage and dosing intervals need adjustment. In case of overdose, symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, facial swelling may appear, and immediate medical attention should be sought along with adequate hydration. When administered as an injection, it should be infused slowly and not mixed with other drugs. Lastly, this medication must be stored out of reach of children, and it is safer not to transfer it to another container.
