Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct therapy alongside dietary and exercise therapies, and it can also be used as a monotherapy. If blood sugar control is not sufficiently achieved with oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be used in conjunction with insulin, and in cases where sulfonylurea or metformin monotherapy is inadequate, this medication can be combined with metformin. This medication improves blood sugar control and aids in diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

The dosage should be adjusted individually for each patient. Administer orally once daily before breakfast or immediately prior to the first meal. Treatment usually begins with a dose of 1 mg of glimepiride once daily and may increase by 1 mg every 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional benefit for doses above 4 mg, although increase to 6 mg or 8 mg may be possible if necessary.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a state of coma. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components, or similar medications should not be administered this drug. There is no experience administering this medication to patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and in such cases, switching to insulin therapy is recommended. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should not take this medication. In patients with severe infections, prior to and after surgery, or those suffering from major injuries, it is advisable to apply insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting should be cautious, as inadequate food absorption may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with genetic conditions like galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. During the first week, there is a higher risk of hypoglycemia, and caution is especially needed for the elderly, patients with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, those who frequently consume alcohol, and patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, etc., and immediate sugar intake or notification to healthcare professionals is necessary if these symptoms occur. Early in treatment, visual disturbances or gastrointestinal symptoms may occur, and rarely abnormalities in liver function, blood disorders, or allergic reactions may arise; if abnormal symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately. For optimal blood sugar control, it is essential to take this medication regularly at designated times, adhere to dietary therapy, and exercise, and quickly consume sugar if hypoglycemia occurs. When taken with other medications, interactions may affect blood sugar control, so it is crucial to inform the physician or pharmacist of all medications currently being used. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should receive insulin therapy instead of this medication, as it may affect the fetus or newborn. In the case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and in emergencies, intravenous glucose may be required. The safety and effectiveness of this medication in children have not been established, and dosage adjustments are necessary for the elderly, considering decreased kidney function. Finally, store this medication out of children's reach and keep it in its original container to ensure safety.
