Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medicine is used to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling blood sugar levels in conjunction with diet and exercise. It can be administered alone, and if blood sugar control is insufficient with oral hypoglycemic monotherapy, it can be combined with insulin. Additionally, it is used in combination therapy with metformin if control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin alone. This helps to effectively improve blood sugar control when used alongside various treatment methods.
Administer orally once daily. Initiate treatment with a starting dose of 1 mg of glimepiride. Dosage may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, there is little additional benefit beyond a dose of 4 mg, but if necessary, it may be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg. If dosing 4 mg daily fails, consider switching to or combining with insulin therapy.
This drug should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma. Patients with known allergies to this drug or its ingredients, or to sulfonylurea drugs should avoid taking it. There has been no experience with this drug in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, and insulin treatment is recommended for these patients. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this drug. Patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or those with severe trauma may require insulin therapy. Gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting may lead to poor food absorption and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This drug contains lactose and should not be used in patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, certain lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. During the first week of taking this medication, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, patients with unbalanced exercise and carbohydrate intake, those with changes in eating patterns, frequent alcohol users, patients with impaired kidney or liver function, those with other endocrine disorders, and patients taking other medications are at a higher risk of hypoglycemia and should be particularly cautious. Hypoglycemia can present with various symptoms such as headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, and in severe cases, can result in a comatose state. If symptoms of hypoglycemia occur, sugar-containing food should be consumed immediately, and if symptoms are severe, medical attention should be sought immediately. Various side effects may arise from this medication, including temporary blurred vision, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions, so if any unusual symptoms occur, a consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is recommended. This medication should be taken regularly for blood sugar control, and dietary modifications and exercise should also be implemented. To prevent hypoglycemia, it is advisable to always carry a source of sugar (e.g., sugar, fruit juice). When taking other medications concurrently, one should inform their doctor or pharmacist as it may affect blood sugar levels. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, this drug should not be used, and insulin therapy should be considered instead. Overdose may cause hypoglycemia, so immediate vomiting should be induced or appropriate treatment should be sought at a hospital. This drug has not been proven safe and effective for children, and dosage adjustments may be necessary for the elderly depending on their kidney function. Finally, this drug should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container.
