This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, as well as for the treatment of osteoporosis in men. Osteoporosis is a condition where the strength of bones decreases, making them more prone to fractures. This medication helps improve bone density, thereby keeping bones strong. Therefore, it is effective in preventing fractures and maintaining bone health.

How to take

Adult dose

As Risendronic Acid Sodium, take one dose of 35 mg orally once a week. Food can interfere with absorption, so take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours before or after food intake. Take it upright with a sufficient amount of pure water (170-230 mL) and do not chew or suck on the tablet. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy for children under 18 years of age have not been established.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastric and esophageal mucosa, so caution should be exercised when prescribed to patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, esophagitis, or ulcers. After taking the medication, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and take it with a sufficient amount of water to reduce esophageal irritation. Patients with esophageal motility disorders, such as esophageal stricture or achalasia, those with hypocalcemia, pregnant women, or women who may become pregnant, and patients with severe renal impairment should not use this medication. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be taken by patients with lactose intolerance. During treatment, it is important to ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and those with hypocalcemia or vitamin D deficiency should be treated before taking this medication. As a bisphosphonate, it has a rare risk of serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw or atypical femoral fractures, so patients should pay attention to oral health and consult a physician if experiencing pain in the legs. When taking this medication, avoid foods or supplements containing divalent cations (calcium, magnesium, iron, etc.) at the same time, and space out the administration by a sufficient time interval before and after taking it to ensure optimal absorption. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and if they are currently taking it, they should consult with a physician. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18 years of age. In the case of overdose, hypocalcemia may occur; therefore, if symptoms arise, the patient should notify healthcare personnel immediately and may require calcium supplementation. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
