This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults: For Risedronate Sodium, take 35 mg orally once a week. Since food can interfere with absorption, take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours before or after food intake. Swallow with a sufficient amount of plain water (170 to 230 mL) in an upright position, and do not chew or suck on it. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking.

Child dose

Children: Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years of age have not been established.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the gastric mucosa, so caution is needed for those with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, esophageal disease, and ulcers. If symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn occur during use, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a physician. It is important to take it with a sufficient amount of water and to avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Particularly, continued use after experiencing esophageal irritation could lead to serious side effects, so care should be taken. Patients with esophageal motility disorders, hypocalcemia, severe renal impairment, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. Those with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should also avoid taking it. This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis, and it is advisable to take it along with calcium and vitamin D. Rarely, serious side effects such as jaw osteonecrosis and atypical femur fractures have been reported with long-term use, so consult a physician immediately if unusual symptoms occur. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform your physician of any medications currently being taken. Avoid using it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and consult a specialist if necessary. The safety of this medication for children under the age of 18 has not been established, and it can be used by the elderly without special dosage adjustments. In case of overdose, blood calcium and phosphate levels may decrease, so visit a medical institution immediately for appropriate treatment.
