Summary

Main use
Treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer-type dementia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
○ Adults: Administer 5 mg of donepezil hydrochloride once daily at bedtime. If sleep disturbances such as abnormal dreams, nightmares, or insomnia occur, morning administration of this drug may be considered. Since donepezil concentrations reach steady state 15 days after administration and the incidence of adverse reactions may be affected by the rate of dose escalation, administer the 5 mg dose for 4~6 weeks. After assessing the clinical response during this period, the dose may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing the dose to 10 mg daily, administer with caution for gastrointestinal adverse reactions. If administration of this drug is discontinued, its effects gradually decrease, and no rebound effect occurs following abrupt discontinuation. ○ Female patients weighing less than average and 85 years of age or older: Since adverse reactions occur frequently, careful monitoring is required. Older, low-weight female patients should not receive more than 5 mg daily.
Child dose
○ Children: There is no experience with use in children.

Precautions

This medication contains the ingredient Donepezil Hydrochloride and is primarily used for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. First, this medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to Donepezil Hydrochloride or any components of the medication, in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and in breastfeeding women. Second, patients with heart diseases, especially those with bradycardia or cardiac conduction disorders, should use this medication cautiously as it may stimulate the vagus nerve and cause a slowdown in heart rate or arrhythmias. Third, patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be cautious as increased gastric acid secretion and enhanced gastrointestinal motility could worsen ulcers. Fourth, patients with a history of asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease should be careful as bronchial smooth muscle contraction and increased mucus secretion may aggravate symptoms. Fifth, patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease may experience exacerbation of symptoms due to cholinergic stimulation from this medication. Sixth, this medication contains the dye Yellow No. 5, and it should be used cautiously if there are allergies or hypersensitivity reactions to this component. Serious adverse reactions such as fainting, bradycardia, heart block, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, seizures, muscle abnormalities, respiratory distress, acute pancreatitis, acute renal failure, and unexplained sudden death may occur while taking this medication. If any of these symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, hallucinations, palpitations, rashes, muscle pain, urinary incontinence, headaches, and fatigue. This medication may affect heart and liver function, necessitating regular check-ups, especially for patients with heart diseases who should periodically check their condition through tests such as an electrocardiogram. Caution is required while driving or operating machinery as dizziness or fatigue may occur. This medication may interact with various other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, you must inform your healthcare provider and consult them. It is generally advised not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and if necessary, a careful decision should be made after consulting a specialist. Safety for pediatric use has not been established, so it should not be used in children. In case of overdose, severe vomiting, bradycardia, respiratory depression, and seizures may occur, and immediate medical attention should be sought. Keep the medication out of reach of children, and it is recommended not to transfer it to other containers.
