This medication reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors and those with type 2 diabetes. It also helps lower the risk of vascular surgeries, angina, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it effectively decreases LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly used for controlling blood cholesterol levels in children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, this drug is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of associated diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For hyperlipidemia: The recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring greater reduction of LDL cholesterol levels, it can start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily (only if a reduction of more than 45% is needed). The usual dosage range for this medication is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals.

Child dose

For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17): The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. The dose should be adjusted according to the individual's recommended treatment goals.

Precautions

This medication may pose a risk of muscle problems; therefore, if symptoms of muscle pain or weakness occur, treatment should be stopped immediately, and medical consultation should be sought. Patients with liver dysfunction or liver disease should not use this medication and should undergo regular liver function tests. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should ensure appropriate contraception while taking it. This medication is not to be administered to children under 10 years of age or certain genetically predisposed lactose-intolerant individuals. Alcoholics, patients with a history of liver disease, patients with decreased kidney function, and elderly individuals should use this medication with extra caution and closely monitor for muscle-related symptoms. Drug interactions may occur when used with other medications; therefore, particularly when taking certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or immunosuppressants, consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is necessary. If symptoms such as malaise, fever, muscle pain, or weakness develop while on this medication, inform a doctor immediately, and blood tests may be required to assess muscle damage. This medication may cause side effects including liver dysfunction, skin rash, allergic reactions, indigestion, and headaches; consult a doctor if any abnormal symptoms occur. There is no specific antidote for overdose; therefore, suitable treatment should be provided based on symptoms, closely monitoring liver function and muscle status. Store out of reach of children and keep in the original container. Prolonged use of this medication may slightly increase the risk of developing diabetes; regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is advisable. Consumption of grapefruit juice during treatment may increase blood concentrations of atorvastatin, thereby raising the risk of side effects. Serious muscle-related symptoms such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis may occur; thus, particularly with high doses, symptoms related to muscles should be monitored carefully. This medication should be used within clinically confirmed safety ranges, and dosages must be adjusted as per doctor's recommendations.
