This drug is effective against various bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Salmonella. It is used for infections of the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract, community-acquired pneumonia, infections of the ears, nose, throat, as well as bacterial prostatitis, urinary tract infections, gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, etc. However, it should be used cautiously only when no other treatment options are available for certain conditions such as acute bacterial sinusitis, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This drug acts broadly against various types of bacteria, aiding in the treatment of infections.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, adults should take 250 to 500 mg of ciprofloxacin orally twice a day between meals. In cases of severe complicated infections, the dose may be increased to 750 mg twice a day. For acute infections, treatment usually lasts for 5 to 10 days, and the medication should be taken for at least 3 days after symptoms have disappeared. Precautions

This medication can cause serious side effects such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system disorders, so if these symptoms occur, one should immediately discontinue use. Patients with myasthenia gravis may experience exacerbation of symptoms if this medication is taken, so it is advisable not to use it. It should be used only restrictively for certain infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media, and only when no other treatments are available. Elderly patients, patients with decreased renal function, and patients taking steroids should be careful as they are at an increased risk of tendon rupture, and concomitant use with steroids should be avoided. Patients with a history of seizures or central nervous system disorders should use this medication carefully due to the risk of seizures. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, individuals under 18 years of age, patients with epilepsy, and those who have previously experienced tendonitis or tendon rupture with this medication should not take it. This drug may interact with various medications, so it is essential to consult an expert if taking other medications. Photosensitivity reactions may occur, so avoid strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure, and discontinue use if abnormal symptoms arise. Blood sugar changes may occur; therefore, diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar closely, and treatment should be sought immediately if hypoglycemia symptoms appear. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery during this medication use, and taking it with alcohol may be hazardous. Overdose can affect kidney function, so seek immediate appropriate emergency treatment and keep out of reach of children. This medication is sensitive to sunlight, so store it away from direct sunlight.

Tendonitis, tendon rupture, exacerbation of myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system effects, seizures, liver abnormalities (jaundice, hepatitis, liver necrosis), anaphylaxis, anaphylactoid response, serum sickness-like reactions, angioedema, shock, severe edema, increased blood pressure, respiratory distress, asthma symptoms, laryngeal edema, acute renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, psychotic reactions (suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts), coma, severe hypoglycemia, hematological complications.

Mild side effects

Headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, taste disorders, insomnia, sensory disturbances (peripheral bilateral paralysis), sensory loss, loss of taste, tremors, mental confusion, drowsiness, migraines, coordination issues, olfactory disorders, anosmia, sensory hyperesthesia, increased intracranial pressure (pseudotumor cerebri), ataxia, vision disorders, color vision disorders, double vision, tinnitus, hearing loss, transient hearing loss, auditory impairment, tachycardia, vasodilation (flushing), hypotension, syncope, vasculitis, QT prolongation, ventricular arrhythmia.
