Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medicine is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, and in cases where blood sugar control is not sufficient, it can be combined with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or metformin to enhance effectiveness. Particularly, when adequate blood sugar control is challenging with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, the combination of this medication with metformin helps in managing blood sugar levels more effectively. This medicine is used to enhance blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
For patients who have not previously received medication, the treatment should begin with 1 mg of glimepiride taken once daily. If necessary, the dose can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Typically, additional benefits are scarcely observed with doses exceeding 4 mg; however, some patients have shown improved metabolic control with dosages increased to 6 mg (or 8 mg). A daily dose of 4 mg is recommended.
This medication should not be used in insulin-dependent diabetes patients or in cases of diabetic ketoacidosis or patients in a coma. Additionally, individuals with a history of allergic reactions to this medication or its components, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides should not be administered this drug. The use of this medication has not been established in patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, thus switching to insulin therapy is recommended. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those with severe trauma should ideally receive insulin therapy. Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting can lead to the risk of hypoglycemia due to impaired food absorption, so caution is needed. This medication contains lactose and should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic diseases. In the first week of treatment, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, careful monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential. Situations with a higher risk of hypoglycemia include elderly individuals who may have difficulty cooperating, poor nutritional status or those who skip meals, irregular eating patterns, excessive exercise combined with imbalanced food intake, and alcohol consumption. Patients with renal or hepatic impairment, coexisting endocrine disorders, and the elderly are also at increased risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is required. If other medications are taken concurrently, it may also affect blood sugar control, requiring consultation with a physician. The most common side effect of this medication is hypoglycemia, which may manifest as headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, sleepiness, loss of consciousness, etc. In the event of hypoglycemia, sugary foods should be consumed immediately, and in severe cases, medical assistance should be sought. During initial administration, visual disturbance or gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc.) may occur. Rarely, abnormal liver function, blood disorders, or allergic reactions may arise, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. This medication should be taken regularly while adhering to dietary and exercise regimens for optimal blood sugar control. Patients and their families should have a clear understanding of the symptoms and risks related to hypoglycemia, and be prepared to respond swiftly in case hypoglycemia occurs. In cases of extreme stress or illness, blood sugar control may become difficult, thus requiring adjustment in treatment strategies in consultation with healthcare providers. There may be interactions with other drugs taken concurrently, so it is vital to inform the doctor or pharmacist of all currently used medications. Especially when taken with drugs metabolized in the liver, blood sugar control may be affected. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid use as it may affect the fetus or newborn, and it is advisable to switch to insulin therapy if necessary. For children under 18 years of age, safety and efficacy have not been established, thus it is preferable not to use this medication. Elderly individuals may experience reduced kidney function, thus careful dosing adjustments and cautious administration are necessary. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur; thus, it is essential to visit a medical institution promptly for appropriate treatment. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container; transferring it to another container may lead to decreased quality or misuse.
