Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to help manage blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunctive therapy when blood sugar control is difficult while following a diet and exercise regimen. It can also be used as monotherapy and may be combined with insulin when sufficient control is not achieved with oral hypoglycemics. Additionally, it may be used in combination with metformin when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin alone. Overall, this medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjust individually for each patient. Swallow without chewing with more than half a cup of water. Administer once daily orally. Must be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg of glimipiride once daily. If necessary, the dose may be increased by 1 mg at 1 to 2-week intervals. Generally, doses above 4 mg provide minimal additional effects.

Precautions

This medication is not to be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a comatose state. Patients allergic to this medication or sulfonylureas, as well as those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, should also avoid its use. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women and nursing mothers should not take this medication. Insulin therapy is recommended for patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgical conditions, or severe trauma. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders may have issues with drug absorption, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so patients with specific genetic lactose metabolism disorders should not take it. During the first week of taking this medication, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, frequent alcohol consumers, and patients with impaired kidney or liver function should exercise additional caution. Additionally, when taking other medications, it's essential to inform the doctor or pharmacist as interactions may affect blood sugar control. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, immediate appropriate measures should be taken, and severe symptoms may require hospitalization. Taking this medication can cause hypoglycemia, with symptoms including headache, intense hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and reduced consciousness. Transient visual disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may also occur; medical consultation is needed immediately for any of these symptoms. In particular, if allergic reactions such as hives or difficulty breathing occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and medical attention sought. This medication must be taken regularly, and it is important to combine it with dietary and exercise therapy. If hypoglycemia occurs, consuming sugar or drinks containing sugar can alleviate symptoms; therefore, carrying a supply of sugar is advisable. Regular monitoring of blood glucose and urine tests during treatment is necessary to assess the drug's efficacy and side effects. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and if necessary, insulin therapy is a safer alternative. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, so inducing vomiting or seeking appropriate treatment at a hospital immediately is essential. If hypoglycemic coma occurs, glucose injection should rapidly restore blood sugar levels, and meticulous observation of blood sugar status should continue thereafter. The safety of this medication has not been established in children, and elderly patients may require dose adjustment due to decreased kidney function. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container.
