Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Do not increase the dose or stop taking this medicine without your doctor's instructions. 1. Essential hypertension 1) Adults (1) Administer 12.5 mg of carvedilol orally once daily for the first 2 days, then administer 25 mg orally once daily. (2) The usual dose is 25 mg orally once daily for 2 weeks. If a dose increase is needed, increase to 25 mg twice daily. The maximum dose per administration is 25 mg, and the maximum daily dose is 50 mg. 2) Elderly patients Some elderly patients may achieve sufficient effects with 12.5 mg once daily. However, the dose may be increased if the effect is insufficient after 2 weeks of treatment. 2. Chronic stable angina 1) Administer 12.5 mg of this medicine twice daily for the first 2 days, then administer 25 mg twice daily. 2) The usual dose is 25 mg twice daily for 2 weeks. If a dose increase is needed (excluding elderly patients), the dose may be increased to 50 mg twice daily. 3. Congestive heart failure Before starting treatment with this medicine, the patient must be stable on their existing standard therapy (conventional treatment for chronic heart failure with an ACE inhibitor, a diuretic, and usually a digitalis preparation). Fluid retention should also be minimized before starting treatment with this medicine. 1) The usual initial dose is 3.125 mg of this medicine orally twice daily for 2 weeks. If the patient tolerates this treatment well, increase the dose to 6.25 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, then increase it to 12.5 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, and then increase it to 25 mg twice daily. 2) After taking each dose for at least 2 weeks, increase the dose gradually to the highest dose the patient can tolerate. 3) The minimum effective dose is 6.25 mg twice daily. The maximum dose is 25 mg twice daily for patients weighing 85 kg or less, and 50 mg twice daily for patients weighing more than 85 kg. 4) To control the rate of absorption, it is recommended to take this medicine with meals in the morning and evening. Taking it with meals slows the rate of absorption and may reduce the incidence of orthostatic hypotension.

This medication is primarily used for the treatment of essential hypertension, chronic stable angina, and congestive heart failure. Therefore, it is effective in stabilizing blood pressure, assisting cardiac function, and alleviating angina symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in many cases for certain patients, so caution is needed. Patients with a history of allergies to this medication or its components should not be administered it. Patients with severely impaired heart function or acute heart shock should not take this medication as it may worsen symptoms. Patients with very slow heart rates or abnormalities in cardiac conduction may also face risks with this medication. Patients with right heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension may experience worsened conditions due to decreased cardiac output. Patients with metabolic abnormalities due to diabetes should also use this medication carefully. Patients with severely weakened heart function or unstable heart failure may have concerns about decreased myocardial strength when using this medication. Patients with respiratory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may experience bronchospasm triggered or worsened by this medication. Specific patients with hypertension or angina, acute pulmonary embolism, or pheochromocytoma may also be at risk from using this medication. This medication should not be given to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Moreover, patients with diabetes, those sensitive to allergic reactions, patients with weakened heart and kidney functions, and the elderly should use this medication cautiously. Side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and serious adverse reactions such as decreased heart function, hypotension, and bradycardia may occur during the use of this medication. Caution is also required if there are abnormalities in liver or kidney function. This medication interacts with many other medications; thus, the effectiveness may change or the risk of side effects may increase depending on other medications taken together. Consultation with a specialist is necessary when used in combination with drugs that lower blood pressure, heart-related medications, diabetes treatments, antidepressants, sedatives, etc. If pregnant or breastfeeding, this medication should not be taken, and caution is advised for its use in children and adolescents as safety and efficacy have not been established. The elderly should start at a low dose since decreased liver function may lead to higher drug concentrations, and their condition should be carefully monitored. In the case of overdose, blood pressure may drop rapidly and heart rate may slow down or heart function may weaken, so immediate medical assistance is required. This medication requires regular cardiac function tests, blood pressure and pulse measurements during long-term use, and abrupt discontinuation can worsen cardiac symptoms, so it should be gradually reduced according to a doctor's instructions. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating dangerous machinery, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption.
