This medication helps improve blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who struggle to achieve adequate control with diet and exercise alone, particularly in overweight adult patients. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to enhance blood glucose control effects. This helps patients manage their blood sugar levels more effectively.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a state where there is an abnormally high concentration of lactate in the blood, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. Caution is needed when using this medication together with other diabetes treatments as it may lead to severe hypoglycemia. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or those with conditions affecting kidney function such as severe infections, congestive heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction should not use this medication. This medication must be discontinued before exams involving contrast media containing iodine and can only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function post-exam. Patients who have an allergic reaction to any components of this medication or those with type 1 diabetes or a history of lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgery patients, or those with severe malnutrition or liver dysfunction should also avoid or use this medication with caution. During treatment, kidney function should be regularly monitored to prevent drug accumulation and associated risks. This medication may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, vitamin B12 deficiency, taste impairment, etc., particularly gastrointestinal symptoms are common at the beginning of treatment but improve over time. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid drinking during treatment. If blood glucose control suddenly worsens or if symptoms of hypoglycemia appear, immediate consultation with a medical professional is necessary, and in cases of high risk for hypoglycemia, sugar or glucose should be ingested. During pregnancy, it is essential to maintain proper blood glucose levels for the health of both the fetus and mother; hence, careful monitoring is necessary if this medication is to be used during pregnancy. In breastfeeding, this medication is secreted in breast milk, so a cautious decision should be made regarding breastfeeding and treatment. Elderly patients are at risk of decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustment and regular kidney function monitoring are required. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis is more significant than hypoglycemia, hence immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing, and it is normal for the tablet coating to be excreted in the stool. The blood glucose control effect may vary depending on other medications taken concurrently, so it is crucial to inform healthcare providers of any other medications used during treatment. Regular monitoring of blood glucose, kidney function, vitamin B12 levels, etc., during the course of treatment is essential for safe management.
