This medication is used to improve atherosclerotic symptoms in adult patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease. It also reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular events, myocardial infarction, stroke, or refractory ischemia in patients with acute coronary syndrome, such as unstable angina or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, who have undergone medical treatment, coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass surgery. In patients with atrial fibrillation who have vascular risk factors and are unsuitable for vitamin K antagonist use with a low risk of bleeding, it helps to reduce the risk of stroke and thromboembolism. It is effective in improving symptoms and reducing risks for various cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, or peripheral arterial disease, administer 75 mg of clopidogrel orally once a day. For patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction), start with a loading dose of 300 mg on the first day of treatment and continue with a maintenance dose of 75 mg orally once a day thereafter. At this time, aspirin 75-325 mg should be administered once a day alongside this medication.

Precautions

This medication is a drug that inhibits platelet aggregation in the blood to prevent thrombus formation. In patients with a genetic deficiency of the CYP2C19 enzyme, the effectiveness of this drug may be reduced, in which case alternative treatment options should be considered. Taking this drug with medications that activate the CYP2C19 enzyme may increase the concentration of the active ingredient of this drug and raise the risk of bleeding, so co-administration should be avoided. Patients with allergies to this medication or those with bleeding, severe liver impairment, nursing women, and those with genetic lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients at high risk of bleeding or with bleeding disorders, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, acute stroke patients, hypertensive patients, elderly, and underweight patients should take this medication with caution, and it should be discontinued 5-7 days before any scheduled surgery. This medication can cause bleeding; therefore, if any bleeding symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately, especially when combined with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. During treatment with this drug, it is important to regularly monitor for bleeding and hematological abnormalities through blood tests and other examinations. This medication may cause various side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, rash, headache, and dizziness, and in serious cases, hematologic disorders such as thrombocytopenia or acquired hemophilia can occur. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a physician before taking this drug, as the risk of bleeding may increase during pregnancy, warranting caution. This medication may interact with other medications, particularly those associated with bleeding risk, anticoagulants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and should be discussed with a doctor when used in combination. Overdose may increase the risk of bleeding, and there are no specific antidotes, so if bleeding symptoms occur, you should visit a medical facility immediately. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and care must be taken not to store it in different containers, as this could jeopardize its quality.
