  • Type 2 diabetes with insufficient blood sugar control
View approved original text

This medication is used for adult patients with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty controlling blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, particularly those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to effectively assist in blood sugar control. This helps achieve stable blood sugar management and contributes to diabetes treatment.

How to take

The dosage is determined based on individual drug effectiveness and tolerability, and it can be increased to a maximum daily dose of 2000mg. Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening, so caution is needed. If taken with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so be careful. It should not be used in patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency, dehydration, severe infections, or acute heart disease. This medication should be discontinued before examinations using radiographic contrast agents and can be resumed after confirming normal renal function post-examination. Patients with allergies to the components of this medication, those with type 1 diabetes, or a history of lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis should not take it. In cases of severe infections, major trauma, or pre- and post-surgery, this medication should temporarily be discontinued and resumed after recovery. Patients with poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, excessive alcohol consumption, dehydration, diarrhea, or vomiting should also exercise caution. In pregnancy, avoid use if there is a risk of placental insufficiency or preeclampsia. While taking this medication, irregular meals, vigorous exercise, or taking interacting medications can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, so caution is essential. Side effects may include vitamin B12 deficiency, altered taste sensation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, particularly gastrointestinal symptoms that commonly occur early in treatment but usually improve over time. If severe skin rashes or itching occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Kidney function should be regularly monitored to prevent drug accumulation and risk, especially in the elderly or those with diminished renal function. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided. This medication can be used during pregnancy, but careful observation of fetal growth is required, and it is not recommended while breastfeeding. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, so it is not to be used in those under 17 years of age. While rare, overdose can lead to hypoglycemia and a risk of lactic acidosis, so immediate medical treatment is necessary in suspected cases. This medication should not be chewed or crushed but swallowed whole; the tablet coating may pass in stool, which is normal. There may be interactions with other medications, so if you are taking any other medications, be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist. Finally, it is important to regularly monitor blood glucose, renal function, and vitamin B12 levels while taking this medication, and to consistently manage meals and exercise in conjunction with medication use.
