Summary

Main use
Treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
○ Adults : Administer donepezil hydrochloride 5 mg once daily at bedtime. If sleep disturbances such as unusual dreams, nightmares, or insomnia occur, morning administration of this medicine may be considered. Since donepezil concentrations reach steady state 15 days after administration and the frequency of adverse reactions may be affected by the rate of dose escalation, administer the 5 mg dose for 4~6 weeks. After evaluating the clinical response during this period, the dose may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing the dose to 10 mg daily, administer with caution for gastrointestinal adverse reactions. When administration of this medicine is discontinued, its effects gradually diminish, and no rebound effect occurs with abrupt discontinuation. This medicine is an orally disintegrating tablet. Place it on the tongue and allow it to dissolve, then take it with or without water. ○ Female patients aged 85 years or older with low body weight : Careful monitoring is required because adverse reactions occur frequently. Elderly female patients with low body weight should not exceed 5 mg daily.
Child dose
○ Children : There is no experience with use in children.

Precautions

This medication contains the ingredient donepezil hydrochloride and is primarily used for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's type dementia. Firstly, this medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this medication or any of its components, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Additionally, patients with heart disease, especially those with bradycardia or arrhythmia, should use this medication with caution, as it may affect heart rate. Patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should take caution as this medication can increase gastric acid secretion and stimulate gastrointestinal motility, possibly worsening ulcer symptoms. Patients with asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease may also experience exacerbation of their symptoms when using this medication, so caution is needed. Patients with Parkinson's disease or extrapyramidal disorders should also be administered this medication with caution as it may worsen their symptoms. Possible adverse reactions while taking this medication include cardiovascular issues (bradycardia, heart block, etc.), gastrointestinal problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc.), liver dysfunction, neurological issues (seizures, tremors, confusion, etc.), musculoskeletal issues (myalgia, muscle tone abnormalities), dyspnea, acute pancreatitis, acute renal failure, etc. Additionally, this medication may affect driving or operating machinery, so caution is needed during initial dosing or dose adjustments. This medication may interact with various drugs, so it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist, especially when used in conjunction with cardiovascular medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-inflammatory analgesics, etc. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should generally not take this medication unless necessary and under the direction of a healthcare professional. Safety in pediatric use has not been established, so it is not used in children. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, and respiratory depression may occur, and immediate medical attention is required. This medication should be taken by placing it on the tongue to dissolve and swallowing with saliva or water, and it should be stored out of reach of children, protected from light to prevent discoloration.
