Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It primarily acts as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy and may also be used alone. If blood sugar control is not achieved with oral hypoglycemic agents, it may be combined with insulin. Additionally, if sufficient control cannot be achieved with sulfonylurea or metformin monotherapy, this medication can be administered in combination with metformin. It can be used in various situations to effectively improve blood sugar control.
Adjust for each patient individually. Swallow whole without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. Administer orally once daily, taken before breakfast or just prior to the first meal. For monotherapy, for patients who have not previously been treated, start with 1 mg of glimepiride once daily and increase the dose by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks. Typically, additional effects are rare when the dosage exceeds 4 mg.
This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes who are using insulin, or in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. It should also be avoided in patients with allergies to this medication or its components, or in those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. It is safest for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid this medication. In cases of severe infections or before and after surgery, insulin therapy is recommended. Caution should be taken in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, as absorption issues may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic problems. During the first week of administration, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar should be checked frequently and patients should be monitored closely. The risk of hypoglycemia increases especially in cases of irregular meals, nutritional deficiencies, excessive exercise, or alcohol consumption. Patients with reduced kidney or liver function, the elderly, or those taking other medications should also exercise caution. If symptoms of hypoglycemia occur, sugar should be ingested immediately, and in severe cases, medical assistance should be sought. This medication may cause various side effects including hypoglycemia, visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, liver dysfunction, blood disorders, and allergic reactions. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to loss of consciousness or coma, so caution is required. If unusual symptoms appear, patients should inform healthcare professionals immediately and consider discontinuing the medication. To control blood sugar, this medication should be taken alongside a consistent diet and exercise program; regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver and kidney function is necessary. This medication may interact with several other drugs, so patients should inform healthcare professionals if they are taking other medications. In the case of overdose, hypoglycemia may worsen, and immediate emergency treatment is required, which may include inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, and intravenous glucose administration. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication, and if necessary, switching to insulin therapy is recommended. Its safety in children under 18 years has not been established, so it is not used in this age group. Dose adjustments may be necessary for the elderly due to potential decline in kidney function.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication may be sensitive to air or moisture, so it must be stored in a tightly sealed container. The recommended storage temperature is between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. This will help maintain the medication's effectiveness safely for a long time.
