Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in patients with obesity
This medication is used for obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or patients with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia and do not respond adequately to dietary and exercise interventions. It is primarily a drug that assists in weight loss based on calorie restriction, and should be used alone without other appetite suppressants. This treatment helps patients manage their weight and contributes to improving their health.
Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals. The maximum daily dose is 75 mg, and the last dose should be taken no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible amount during the initial period (within 2 weeks), adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce inappropriate use and risks, treatment with this medicine may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and patient).
This drug should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short period of time. The weight loss effect is not significant, requiring strict management during use, and if tolerance develops, the dosage should not be increased but rather discontinued. Prolonged use may lead to drug abuse and dependency, so caution is necessary. If psychological dependence develops, the dosage should be gradually reduced before discontinuation, as sudden cessation can cause severe fatigue or depression. There is a risk of serious heart disease such as pulmonary artery hypertension, so if symptoms occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and a doctor's assessment should be sought. Patients with certain heart diseases, hypertension, glaucoma, or hyperthyroid conditions should not take this medication. Patients with some conditions such as cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, or diabetes should take this medication under careful medical supervision. During treatment, side effects such as insomnia, anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth may occur, and if symptoms are severe, consultation with a doctor is advised. This medication affects the central nervous system, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is essential to inform your doctor about any other drugs being taken. It is advisable not to use this medication during pregnancy or lactation, particularly in early pregnancy due to its sensitive nature. Children under 16 years of age and elderly patients with reduced kidney function should not take this medication. In case of overdose, severe toxicity symptoms, heart problems, and mental disturbances may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a sealed container.
