Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in patients with obesity
This medication is used to aid weight loss in obese patients who do not respond to appropriate dietary control and exercise. It is particularly indicated for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, or for those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia if their BMI is 27 kg/m2 or higher. This medication serves as a short-term adjunct to a calorie-restricted weight loss regimen and should be used alone without other appetite suppressants. Therefore, for safe weight loss, it is effective when used alongside dietary control and exercise.
Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals. The maximum daily dose is 75 mg, and the medicine should be taken no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible dose during the initial period (within 2 weeks), adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. This medicine is for short-term use (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use of this medicine, treatment may continue if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be taken in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should only be used alone for a short duration. Combining this medication with other drugs for weight loss is not recommended due to lack of established safety and efficacy. While using this drug, the weight loss effect may not be significant, and efficacy may decrease after a certain period, so patients should not increase the dosage and should discontinue if necessary. Long-term use may lead to drug abuse and dependence; thus, it must be strictly regulated. If psychological dependence develops, the dosage should be gradually reduced and discontinued, as sudden discontinuation can cause severe fatigue and depression. There is a possibility of serious side effects related to the heart and lungs, so if symptoms occur, use should be immediately stopped, and evaluation should be sought. This medication should not be used by patients with certain conditions or those taking other medications, particularly those with heart disease, hypertension, glaucoma, or hyperthyroidism, as it is contraindicated. Caution should be exercised with patients who have cardiovascular diseases or epilepsy, and regular monitoring is necessary. Common side effects of this medication may include insomnia, anxiety, dizziness, and dry mouth. There may be a risk of psychiatric symptoms or dependence with long-term use. Pregnant or nursing women should preferably not use this medication, and it should not be administered to children or the elderly. In case of overdose, immediate detoxification and symptomatic treatment are required, and it should be stored out of the reach of children. This medication is classified as a controlled substance due to the potential for abuse and dependence, so it must be used strictly as directed by healthcare professionals.
