Weight loss adjunct therapy for patients with obesity (including risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes)
This medication is used for short-term weight loss assistance in initial obesity patients who find it difficult to lose weight through appropriate dietary or exercise therapy, specifically those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia with a BMI of 27 or above. It plays a role in supporting the treatment of exogenous obesity based on calorie restriction, and should be used alone without combining with other appetite suppressants. This medication effectively aids in weight loss therapy and helps improve health conditions.
Adults: This medication as phendimetrazine tartrate is orally administered as 35 mg once 2 - 3 times a day, one hour before meals. The dose should use the minimum effective amount but should be adjusted individually. For some patients, a dose of 17.5 mg once daily may be appropriate. The dose should not exceed 70 mg three times daily. It is administered for a short duration (within 4 weeks).
This medication must not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants as it may lead to serious heart conditions. This medication should only be used alone for a short period in the treatment of exogenous obesity, and combining it with other weight loss drugs is not recommended due to lack of safety and effectiveness confirmation. Long-term use of this medication may significantly increase the risk of serious pulmonary vascular disease called pulmonary hypertension, so caution is needed. If symptoms such as shortness of breath during exercise, chest pain, fainting, or leg swelling occur, discontinue the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Caution should be taken to evaluate cardiac status before administration due to potential risks related to valvular heart disease, and it is not recommended for patients with heart murmurs or valvular disorders. Patients with certain conditions, such as hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, psychological anxiety, or a history of substance abuse should not take this medication. In addition, children under 16 years old, pregnant women, or women who may become pregnant should not take this medication. This medication affects the central nervous system, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosages. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, heart irregularities, and vomiting may occur, so it is essential to adhere to the prescribed dosage. Safety has not been established for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and it should be avoided due to the risk of harm to the fetus or infant. This medication is classified as a controlled substance with a risk of abuse, and abrupt discontinuation after prolonged high-dose use may result in severe fatigue and depression. Therefore, this medication should be taken cautiously and under strict medical supervision, and consulting with a healthcare professional should be done immediately if any abnormal symptoms occur.
