Summary

Main use
Treatment of herpes zoster virus infection
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 750 mg orally once daily for 7 days. Take it at the same time each day. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Patients with renal impairment: Because the clearance of this drug is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be made with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29: 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) If only the serum creatinine level is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following equations. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 3) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis: For patients on hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is preferable, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%, administer the full dose of this drug immediately after dialysis. 3. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no specific recommended dose has been established.

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Individuals who are allergic to this medicine or its components should not use it. Patients with lactose intolerance or hereditary lactose-related conditions should also avoid this medication. Patients with compromised kidney function should use this medicine cautiously. Mild to moderate symptoms such as headache or nausea may occur during treatment. Additionally, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, palpitations, abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rash, itching, and rarely severe skin reactions or worsening kidney function have been reported. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so safe sexual practices should be maintained during symptomatic periods. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery if dizziness or drowsiness occurs. No specific dosage adjustment is needed for patients with slightly impaired liver function; however, the effectiveness may decrease in patients with severe liver dysfunction. This drug has relatively few interactions with other medications, but caution is warranted as drug concentrations may change when used in combination with certain medications. The use of this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women should be carefully considered, and it should only be used when the clinical benefits outweigh the risks. Children under 18 years of age should not use this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients generally do not require dosage adjustments, but dosage should be adjusted if kidney function is impaired. In the case of overdose, appropriate treatment is necessary, and hemodialysis can reduce the plasma concentration of the active ingredient of this drug. This medication should be stored in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius and kept out of reach of children. Transferring to other containers should be avoided as it may compromise quality.
