Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control disorder in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication aids in improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes by supplementing dietary and exercise therapy. It can be administered alone, and in cases where blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be used in combination with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Additionally, in cases where the effect of sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy is inadequate, it can be administered together with metformin. This medication helps to effectively control blood sugar levels and assist in diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

Administered orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately prior to the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg of Glimepiride taken once daily, and it can be increased by 1 mg every 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, doses above 4 mg show little additional effect, but if necessary, it can be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg. If a dose of 4 mg daily is ineffective, consider switching to insulin therapy or combination therapy.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also safe to avoid administration in cases of allergy to this medication or its components. There is no previous experience with this medication in patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, so it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not be administered this medication. It is safer for patients with severe infections or those undergoing surgery or with severe trauma to receive insulin therapy. Caution is necessary for patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting, as improper food absorption may pose a risk of hypoglycemia. During the first week of administration, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Special caution is required for the elderly, those in poor nutritional status or skipping meals, and those consuming alcohol. Patients who have an imbalance in muscle activity and carbohydrate intake, or those with compromised kidney and liver function, may also respond more sensitively to this medication. Furthermore, patients with other endocrine diseases or those taking concurrent medications should be informed of the increased risk of hypoglycemia. This medication lowers blood sugar levels, which may lead to hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. It is important to consume sugary foods quickly to raise blood sugar levels if hypoglycemia occurs. Moreover, various side effects such as visual disturbances, gastrointestinal disorders, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, so if abnormalities arise, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. While taking this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management should be accompanied, and patients and their families should be thoroughly informed about the risks and symptoms of hypoglycemia, as well as treatment methods. It is advisable to always carry sugary foods in case of hypoglycemia. In situations of stress, surgery, infection, etc., that make blood sugar control challenging, temporary switching to insulin therapy may also be considered. When taking other medications, it may affect blood sugar control, so all medications being taken should be reported to a doctor or pharmacist. Caution is particularly necessary when taking medications that affect the enzymes that metabolize this medication in the liver. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, this medication should not be used as it could harm the fetus or newborn, and if necessary, switching to insulin therapy or discontinuing breastfeeding should be considered. This medication is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. For the elderly, caution should be exercised in dosage adjustment as renal function may be impaired. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency measures. Treatment such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, or intravenous glucose may be necessary, so preparedness for emergencies is essential. Finally, it is important to store this medication out of reach of children and keep it in its original container, and to take it exactly as directed by a physician.
