Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this drug 250 mg orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this drug 125 mg orally 2 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer this drug 250 mg orally 2 times daily. Interrupt treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since the creatinine clearance of this drug is reduced in patients with renal impairment, adjust the dose with caution. Dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formulas. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis In patients undergoing hemodialysis, it is preferable to administer the drug every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. A 4-hour hemodialysis session reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this drug immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with a known allergy to this drug, its components, or the active substance penciclovir. It should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function, and dosage adjustments may be necessary as needed. During treatment, symptoms such as headache and nausea may occur, but most are mild to moderate. Rarely, blood-related issues, mental confusion, dizziness, hallucinations, increased heart rate, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, and edema have been reported. Special caution is warranted in patients with impaired renal function as there is a potential risk of acute renal failure. This drug does not completely cure genital herpes, and it is important to avoid sexual contact during symptom episodes and to maintain safe sex. If recurrence symptoms appear, treatment should be started immediately. This drug does not significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, but if dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion occurs during treatment, driving or hazardous tasks should be avoided. Generally, patients with liver dysfunction do not require dosage adjustments, but caution is needed in patients with severe liver impairment as drug efficacy may be diminished. There is a low potential for drug interactions with this medication, but blood concentration levels may change when combined with specific drugs, so consultation with a healthcare professional is advised. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using this medication, as should nursing women. It is advisable not to use this drug in children under the age of 18, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In elderly patients, dosage adjustments are generally not necessary, but dosage may need to be adjusted if renal function is impaired. In the event of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment; hemodialysis can lower the blood concentration of the active substance in this drug. This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air and moisture. It should be kept in a cool, dry place at or below 30 degrees Celsius, and stored out of reach of children. Transferring to another container is not recommended for maintaining quality.
